About Us
Australian Firefighters International Relief and Education (AFIRE) is a non-Government Organisation (NGO) set up to assist firefighters, in all cultures, provide the best possible assistance to communities in emergency situations.
This assistance is provided beyond the borders of services, departments, states, countries, cultures and religions.
History
The concept of AFIRE started in 2006 with discussions between a number of Victorian firefighters about what we could do to assist on an international level, using the specialised skills we have. A number of the initial members had travelled extensively and had a good understanding of the conditions in some of these countries.
In June 2006 two of these members travelled to Cambodia on holidays and both very quickly developed a passion for the country. On their return there was no question as to whether or not AFIRE should exist, but how we make it happen.
On the 7th of August, after many discussions and a lot of research, six people met in a restaurant in Melbourne and formed AFIRE. Since that day things have progressed very quickly, with us managing to plan our first trip in only 3 months.
AFIRE is now made up of six directors and more than fifteen other members, filling various roles and responsibilities. Everyone's involvement is voluntary and many members have contributed a lot of time and money to making this organisation grow.
